South Carolina Beaches in August...

Holy Carp.  Never doing THAT again.

Don't get me wrong.  South Carolina is one of my favorite places... especially around Chucktown (Charleston).  Magical, fun city with an incredible downtown, and great shoreline... and lots of fascinating islands to explore.  But August is not exactly the perfect time to be there.

We had a wonderful time downtown exploring... they have a great shoreline, and downtown that has few rivals... hundreds of interesting shops, free on-off buses, and a huge outdoor market.  Had a fantastic

dinner, and all in all it was a fun date. There are tons of islands to explore, and we found one of our all-time favorite campgrounds there on St. James Island.  Beautiful campground, and an out-of-this world dog park... completely with lake to splash in.  Furbabies were in heaven!

Our mistake was going to Hunting Island (45 min S. of Charleston) and camping on the beach (or rather, at a state part on the beach).  Not that the beach wasn't beautiful, with an awesome lighthouse at the end... it just that it was... well... August.  And 96 degrees.  And 98% humidity.  And had mosquitos and gnats the size of Volkswagens.  We lasted 30 whole minutes on the beach, sweltering, having to hold onto our umbrella shade for all we were worth to keep it from blowing away... and then said "Oh, HELL no," and beat a hasty retreat back to our trailer.

We were having some issues with our new shower, so we used their bathhouse, which was 100 yards or so away.  By the time we walked there in the mornings, we were soaked to the skin.  We both vowed to come back in Jan or Feb, when the temps and humidity more closely resembled something actually habitable, and when the bugs were taking their winter nap.
